Perspectives on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) (Sussman; 2005)

Perspectives on ITS is a collection of the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) writings of Professor Joseph M. Sussman from MIT. Professor Sussman is a long-time major participant in the ITS world, beginning with his work on the core writing team in the original IVHS Strategic Plan in 1991-92, and continuing on to the present day. He has worked in a number of ITS area and is a keen observer of the ITS scene in general. The book contains extended articles on various aspects of ITS and perspectives on the future of the field, building on its rich history; organizational issues related to ITS - in particular, regionalism and the transportation / information infrastructure; and ITS' implications for the transportation profession at large and for transportation education. In addition it contains 14 selected columns from the ITS Quarterly.

Modelling Driver Behaviour in Automotive Environments (Cacciabue; 2007) Critical Issues in Driver Interactions with Intelligent Transport Systems

In the automotive environment, the paradigm of the joint human-machine system is called the Driver-Vehicle-Environment (DVE) model. Several studies have pointed out the unique nature of this domain, which can refer the standardisation and normalisation of behaviours, contexts and technology. This book presents a general overview of the various factors that contribute to modelling human behaviour in this specialised environment. All of these aspects contribute to creating the overall picture of the DVE model, and demonstrate the scope and dimensions of the many different interaction processes that demand modelling consideration. This long-awaited volume, written by world experts in the field, presents state-of-the-art research and case studies. It will be invaluable reading for professional practitioners graduate students, researchers and alike.

Fleet Telematics (Goel; 2008) Real-time management and planning of commercial vehicle operations

FLEET TELEMATICS: Real-Time Management and Planning of Commercial Vehicle Operations combines wireless telematics systems with dynamic vehicle routing algorithms and vehicle-positioning systems to produce a telematics-enabled information system that can be employed by commercial fleet operators for real-time monitoring, control, and planning. The book presents a Messaging & Fleet Monitoring System that automatically identifies deviations between the planned and the current state of the transportation system and a Dynamic Planning System (DPS) that provides real-time decision support considering the current state of the transportation system. The DPS uses newly developed dynamic vehicle routing algorithms to find high-quality solutions and adjust schedules and routes immediately.
